크리스마스에 선물 사달라고 조르는 아이들. 크리스마스가 무슨 날인지는 일고 있니?

여기, 크리스마스에 무슨 선물을 받을지가 아닌 어떤 선물을 줄지를 고민하는 화자의 마음이 적혀있는 시가 있습니다.

제일 마지막 연은 My Gift 라고 해서 아이들에게 널리 알려져있는 시인데요, 알고보니 더 긴 시의 한 부분이었습니다.

그분께 난 무엇을 드릴 수 있을까, 이렇게 가난한데
내가 목자였다면 양을 드렸을텐데
동방박사라면 선물을 드렸을 것이고.
난 내가 드릴 수 있는 그것, 내 마음을 드리겠네

아마 선물 달라고 하는 아이들의 마음을 숙연케 할 것이라고 생각해요. 이 시를 읽으며 크리스마스의 참 뜻을 새겨볼 수 있길 바랍니다.

In the bleak midwinter

In the bleak midwinter, frosty wind made moan,
Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone;
Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow,
In the bleak midwinter, long ago.

Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him, nor earth sustain;
Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign.
In the bleak midwinter a stable place sufficed
The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

Enough for Him, whom cherubim, worship night and day,
Breastful of milk, and a mangerful of hay;
Enough for Him, whom angels fall before,
The ox and ass and camel which adore.

Angels and archangels may have gathered there,
Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air;
But His mother only, in her maiden bliss,
Worshipped the beloved with a kiss.

What can I give Him, poor as I am?
If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb;
If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part;
Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart.
